In May 2018, in the eastern part of the Kilauea volcano, on the Big Island of Hawaii, a major eruption began that lasted for months. A glowing lava river formed that reached into the ocean, destroying homes, farms, jungles, and beaches, while creating new land. The process of destruction and creation occurred in a context of lush tropical vegetation.
